Local Attractions

The Mearns encompasses a range of coastal and inland scenery which is described so vividly by Lewis Grassic Gibbon in A Scots Quair.

Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre

Lewis Grassic Gibbon, author, went to school in Drumlithie. He was born James Leslie Mitchell in 1901 and spent most of his boyhood in Kincardineshire (now Aberdeenshire), the setting of A Scots Quair a trilogy of Sunset Song, Cloud Howe and Grey Granite.  The Lewis Grassic Gibbon centre is nearby (5 minutes by car) at Arbuthnott, nr Inverbervie.

Brechin Model Farm
For young and old alike this is well worth a visit. Farm machinery, a model train, adventure play area and a boating pond all surrounded by friendly farm animals. There is also a visitor centre and restaurant.

House of Dun
The House of Dun lies 20 mins south of Drumlithie not far from the Brechin Model Farm.

Stonehaven Open Air Heated Pool
Throughout the summer months the Art Deco style heated Stonehaven Pool is a great attraction for those wishing to swim in the open air without having to take to the sea.

Castles nearby

Drumlithie is ideally situated for touring local castles and ruins, all the following are open to the public.  The staff will be happy to assist in pointing you in the right direction! 

These include:

bulletGlamis Castle - the birthplace of the late Queen Mother. Located south of Drumlithie, as well as the Castle itself it has wonderful gardens to view.
bulletCrathes Castle and woodland walks is situated on the North Deeside Road. This Castle has grounds, large ponds, gardens, picnic areas and a children's play area for a great day out. It also has a restaurant and garden centre.
bulletDrum Castle Also situated on the North Deeside Road with walks and gardens.
bulletDunnottar Castle (10 minutes away) is a ruined castle set on the cliff edge, it was used as a backdrop in the film 'Hamlet'.

St Cyrus National Nature Reserve & Fowlsheugh Bird Sanctuary
Head south-eastward from Drumlithie to the coast and St Cyrus to visit this wonderful nature reserve, walk along the waters edge to the waterfall, find semi-precious stones and take in the views. At the South side of the reserve visit the Kirkside graveyard, complete with skull and crossbones.

The Fowlsheugh Reserve is a haven to sea-birds, including puffins, boat trips are run in the summer months to allow you to view the reserve from the sea.  Also on this stretch of coast is Todhead point, the smallest lighthouse in the British Isles.

Catterline
From Drumlithie head east to a lovely coastal artists colony with a wonderful cliff top walk and path down to the rocky beach.

Fettercairn Whisky Distillery
Set the very pretty nearby village of Fettercairn is a whisky distillery - well worth a visit.

Fasque House
Near Fettercairn is Fasque House, which was the family home of Victorian Prime minister William Gladstone.  This is open to the public and gives an insight to what is was like to live in a   19th century country house.
